December Newsletter: Our 2019 Highlights

SeedTribe highlights

Our end of year newsletter sums up our highlights for 2019.

Hi,

As the end of the year approaches, we have been reflecting on all that has happened in 2019. It has been a fantastic year full of changes, fundraises, and shifting trends, as well as lots of press coverage and accolades. So we wanted to share with you some of our highlights.

One of the biggest changes this year is our shift from being a crowdfunding platform to connecting impact startups with angel investors. Alongside this we relaunched our Impact Hub which supports profit-with-purpose businesses that address one or more of the UN’s SDGs. We want to practice what we preach, so building this has been a true collaboration. Thank you to everyone who has been involved with their ideas, feedback, and introductions - it wouldn’t be possible without you!

As well as all the online changes, the SeedTribe team has grown! From Liv’s one-man-band we are now a core team of four. Joseph works on business development and operations, as well as being a master of content curation. Harry is the brains behind the design of our beautiful new Hub. Rozzy has been instrumental in supporting our entrepreneurs, sourcing and writing articles for our Hub and newsletters, and making the Hub engaging and easy to navigate. Growing SeedTribe wouldn’t be possible without the ongoing support of the wider Angel Investment Network team.

This year we have been involved in some fantastic raises, with two standouts being Teysha Technologies and PinPoint. Teysha, who raised £1.2 million, are tackling plastic pollution through their fully biodegradable substitutes for plastics made from all-natural and inedible agricultural waste. PinPoint use data science to detect the early signs of cancer, helping to save lives and reduce the costs of treatment.

Tracking trends has provided fascinating insight into which SDGs are being addressed by SeedTribe startups. Coming in at number 1 is SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. This is closely followed by SDG 13, Climate Action, and SDG3 Good Health and Wellbeing. Over the next year we look forward to unpacking these trends and seeing how they develop.

We are passionate about supporting female founders. According to the Treasury, the gender gap equates to 1.1 million missing businesses and a £250 billion opportunity for the UK economy. Currently 10% of the businesses we support are led by female founders, which is something we are determined to increase in 2020.

On that note, we would love to hear your ideas about how we can support better diversity and impact entrepreneurs, what you think the trends in 2020 will be, and what SDGs we should be focusing on. Please send any ideas to info@seedtribe.com.

And finally, we want to leave you with two ways to shop more sustainably this festive season: find some amazing second-hand clothes on Loopster or source ethical brands on Compare Ethics. Investing in change doesn’t have to be expensive, but starts with small, everyday actions.

From all of us at SeedTribe we wish you a fabulous festive season and a Happy New Year!

Best wishes,

The SeedTribe Team
