Our February newsletter looks at what startups are doing to address SDG 13: Climate Action.

From Greta to Attenborough, discussions around climate change have become a firm part of the news cycle, and the last couple of weeks are no exception. With Microsoft declaring they will become carbon negative by 2030, BlackRock announcing that sustainability will be at the centre of their investment approaches, and climate action being at the heart of this year’s World Economic Forum in Davos, some of the loudest and most powerful voices are, it seems, acknowledging it is time for change. But what about at the other end of the spectrum: what is happening in the world of startups?

Here too, the environment is a big focus of attention: it is the largest growth area we have seen among the startups we support. From companies revolutionising the food system, to those making the fashion industry more sustainable, this myriad of solutions is, we believe, a cause for optimism.The two startups we are shining a spotlight on this week are no exception to this.

Local Electricity Project

They are transforming how electricity is generated through their greener, localised approach. We spoke to their Co-founder Samson to find out about how the improve access to electricity by teaching young people in Africa how to create it.

CCell

CCell uses 100% renewable energy to rapidly grow artificial reefs. We interviewed Will, their Founder, to learn more about how their technology is changing coastal protection in an environmentally beneficial way.

Climate change is, of course, a huge concern with potentially catastrophic consequences. Yet as the startups which are part of SeedTribe show, it also presents an opportunity. It is through innovative thinking that financially viable and environmentally beneficial solutions can be found.
